Sports/Remedial/Deep Tissue Massage
Firstly, if you are looking for a relaxing massage with candles and light music, you’re in the wrong place!
Here at Martin Haley | Solutions Fitness, we offer a range of massage based treatments but not the gentle touch.
Over the last 10-20 years or so, traditional Remedial Massage has been re-branded with terms like Sports Massage and the like. It really doesn’t matter what your preferred term is as they are basically the same depending on what your outcome is and when you have the treatment.
Sports Massage was a term devised in the early 80’s mainly as athlete’s started to find out about the benefits they could get to help them with their sports preparation and recovery. The term massage had an undercurrent so it also meant that recreational sports people could also get the benefit without others thinking badly of them.
Today, even non-sports or active people will request a Sports Massage where as just a few years ago, they would probably feel too embarrassed to.
So what IS the difference?
Well, the major difference apart from the setting (candles, lighting, music), is that Sports Massage is generally firmer or deeper, depending on what outcome is desired. The client anticipates being worked with fairly hard, deep pressure. This may, or may not, result in some soreness later or the next day, but that shouldn’t be anything major and shouldn’t last.
Sports Massage is most often for someone who is active in terms of sport or recreation to ease tired, stiff, aching muscles, not for injury issues. For instance, someone may book in with myself for an injury treatment then once that has resolved, I recommend they return every so often for a ‘maintenance session’ which is generally a Sports Massage. Sessions almost always include some stretching.
Remedial Massage is generally used when working with problems or injuries. This is basically using different forms of massage to resolve a muscular problem. We would almost always use some other form of treatment alongside Remedial Massage, such as stretching, mobility or strengthening exercises. Whereas Sports Massage would work either half body or full body, Remedial Massage would usually be used on a specific body area where the problem was.
Either sessions are generally done with the client removing a certain amount of clothing and having oil applied to their skin. Often, clients don’t wish for this so we work through clothing with compression techniques. So if the thought of undressing and/or being covered in oil puts you off, it’s not a problem.
Charges:
Sessions are up to 60 minutes but initial session may go over. Payments can be made by cash, BIZUM, Transfers and all major cards

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Do you treat females as well or just males?
A: Both. We have an equal client base of male and females. Anybody that feels wary of attending on their own are welcome to bring a chaperone with them
Q: What should I expect after the session?
A: Everyone is different and we always explain aftercare to all clients. Not everyone, but many people will feel tired and thirsty following their session, especially if they haven’t undergone a session like this before. Some clients will be a little sore or achy the next day or so. We recommend taking things easy and don’t do anything too strenuous, plus drink plenty of water
Q: How often should I book a Deep Tissue or Sports Massage?
A: This is probably the MOST asked question! The answer is not simple as it depends on several factors. Firstly, I absolutely recommend people DO have a regular maintenance session. This means we can keep the client is good shape and catch any small niggles before they develop. But, it depends on your financial situation – can you afford to come every month? Have you got the time or ability to travel? How physical is your job, or even how sedentary is your job? Do you get to a certain time frame and break down?
See, this is all personal but I will say that a big majority of my clients do come back monthly for maintenance. Then there are others that come back every 6-8 weeks. There are then those that I only see when they break down with injury/pain. This just means that you should expect between 2-5 sessions in a short space of time which means the cost outlay will be significant in a short period.
Q: If I have a certain condition, should I not undergo Massage?
A: YES. This list is not exhaustive but I’ll list some things that should exclude you from having any type of Massage. Open wounds, swelling/inflammation, fever, virus, Cancer (ask your doctor/consultant), some neurological pain, certain skin conditions/allergies. It is best to inform us when you book of any issues and we can advise you better at that time
Q: I’ve had massage before and come away feeling it was too light and didn’t get any benefit. How do you work?
A: The majority of my clients will state I work very firmly but at the end of the day, it’s about what you want. I always tell my clients to let me know if they want more or less pressure. If you like deep pressure, I’m sure you’ll love my sessions!
Q: What if I have a specific injury, can I still book in with you?
A: Of course. Treatments are covered by our Treatment Page but contact us and we can discuss your needs
Q: I work in the day. Do you offer out of hours appointments?
A: No. Work hours are Monday – Friday 9:30 – 2:00 (last appointment) and also a Saturday morning. No home visits
Q: Do you take private medical/health insurance?
A: No. We are not chartered so therefore cannot take private insurance
Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes. We are fully insured for all our services and our policy is on view
Q: How long have you been working in this field?
A: We started out in 1993. In the early years I worked in professional football with Barry Town AFC, Inter CableTel AFC, Rugby with Barry RFC, and with Welsh Athletics. The last 15+ years has been mainly working with the general public, both sporting and non-sporting, and individual elite/professional athletes/sports persons
