I was working on a client last week in order to get their breathing pattern working efficiently when they asked a question. “If your nose and mouth canals are so close and you can breathe through both, why is it so important to breathe through your nose?” I knew some of the reasons were so the air is warmed up and also filtered by going through the nose, but I couldn’t remember the other, more important reasons. Therefore, I thought it was time to write a post up on just that subject. Many clients that come to me will know… read more →
I wanted to put together an article about the varied expectations people have regarding treatments, as it’s something that crops up almost daily. In general, peoples expectations tend to be that issues or injuries will be cleared up in one session. Unfortunately, this is totally unrealistic. Yes, sometimes when you have just overworked yourself a little and are simply aching or sore, one session will be enough to calm things down, especially if you get it sorted early on. For problems that are causing pain or restriction of movement, clearing these issues is going to take longer. How long is… read more →
Following on from the recent posts focusing on breathing, here’s a case study from a while back. A while ago, I got a call from a family member on a Sunday morning. They were in excruciating pain in their mid back. They had falling off a stool trying to open a high window and when they stepped back/down, the cat was under their foot and so lost balance and CRASH! Fell backwards and hit back – can’t remember now if it was against the wall or the floor. Anyway, they had trouble breathing but worse was the pain. They were… read more →

Following on from my recent post on the causes of Plantar Fasciitis, I had a new client recently with this issue and thought it would be good to give you a ‘real life’ account of this condition. New client came in just over a week ago complaining of right foot pain along the sole and hadn’t been able to run for over 3 months. Even walking was very painful, especially first thing in the morning and at the end of the day. The client had seen someone else who ‘diagnosed’ a ruptured tendon and would need an MRI scan and… read more →
One of the banes of runners lives is that dreaded foot pain, just in front of the heel pad. You wake up in the morning and it’s nigh on impossible to put weight onto your foot. You walk around for a few minutes and it eases a little. Try to run and it stops you in your tracks. But it isn’t just runners that suffer with this. It can happen to anyone. Now when I was starting out in sports injury treatment, the protocol for this was to massage and stretch the tight fascia of the sole of the foot. Thankfully,… read more →
One of the most common conditions, or ‘injuries’ I see is some form of Sciatica. Well, Sciatica is not really a condition but the affect of something impinging on the Sciatic nerve. This could be a disc in the spine bulging and pressing on the Sciatic nerve, an anteriorly tilted pelvis, or even muscles within the pelvic region becoming tight and ‘trapping’ the nerve. A common problem for runners is when the Piriformis muscle becomes tight and presses on the Sciatic nerve. Usually, their course of action is to stretch the muscle or use something like a tennis ball to… read more →
